Starting around 1860, Americans began practicing this new type of folk art portraiture - the painted tintype!
These are actual photographs that were painted over by those crazy artistic Victorians. Some more nicely executed than others, some are more interesting than others, but all of them are unique in their own way, and all are great pieces of folk art.
After painting these were usually placed behind a paper mat and then in nice, wooden frames. Over the years, most were removed and what you typically find now are these loose tintypes, many with paper reside from the original mat still attached, and because of the size, almost all display bends and other wear.
** DESCRIPTION **
Original, c.1870 hand-painted tintype of a nicely-dressed, good looking young dude with green eyes. A real lady killer - maybe even in the literal sense! Great hand-coloring.
This tintype is large at about 7.25" x 5.5", though not quite full-plate (8.5" x 6.5").
Very good antique condition with no rusting. There's a little scratch near the center, as shown, and a light, insignificant horizontal bend that does not detract from the image.
